Hello,

We have some vinyl in front of a stove that appears to have debris under the vinyl. However, when you press down on the bubbles with your finger, it will go down with no effort and pop back up to the original state. They are scattered in front of the stove and we are thinking that it may be hot grease that got on the vinyl. Any ideas or anyone see this before?

Thank you!
Cyndi

Is the sheen on the wear layer different than the other non-affected areas? There's alot of different vinyls out there. Brand name and style? Is it fully adhered vinyl? Need more info.

The sheen didn't appear to be different from the non-affected areas. It's CMH's Prelude vinyl which was fully adhered. This was the first install. No overlay.

Cyndi, sounds funny to me. Call the manufacture and get an inspection. Or call Lee Tucker here is close to you.

Thanks for the link...we are having the manufacture inspector coming out. It's definitely fishy since it's just in front of the stove.

Prelude is a lower-end/base-grade sheet vinyl manufactured by Congoleum Corporation and distributed in your area by CMH Flooring Products, Inc.

The short no BS version is that the person most likely to come out and look-see is a distributor sales rep. Part of his job has traditionally been to run interference for the manufacturer. He’ll tell you that it’s not a manufacturing concern and if he’s kind he might impart some of his infinite wisdom and venture to guess at what the cause of the problem might be.

He might guess correctly although this is the only favor you’ll receive and in the end to save yourself alot of time and trouble what you need to be looking for is someone who can fix it. Find that extra piece of left over material, bring it inside, assess its condition and roll it up face out. This is the first thing the repairman will ask about.

What wayner said, tell them you want a real inspection not a guesstimate.

The only real way to tell is open it up. Tell them to bring a lino knife and cut it open. It has to be fixed anyway.

Worst case scenerio is that the warranty is up for the installation. Then if it is installation related your screwed. If its a manufacturing defect, collect the money and buy tile.

Do you have a wood substrate or a concrete subfloor?
New construction or remodel work?

It's on concrete and it was straight installation. No overlay.

Just curious, Why do you think it may be from hot grease?

boots sounds a bit like a dealer trying to hang a failure on the end user (grease) or the installer (debris). Maybe even the distributor cause how often does the consumer know the name of the distributor?

Most likely a gas bubble. Syringe with some glue should take care of them.
Could have been a contaminated spot on the concrete as well. Again a syringe with glue may help but would be dependent on how much contamination.

Was this a new construction job or remodel?

Got to agree with Wayner, does sound like a dealer looking to blame someone.
